DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR EXPORT PRODUCTS

  1. HAND-KNOTTED WOOLEN CARPET

    1. HS: 5701.10
    2. Description: Hand knotted carpet from hand spun pure wool.
    3. Uses: Floor covering, wall decoration, seat cover etc.
    4. Specifications:
      The major production processes : sorting, wool washing, spinning, weaving, finishing, trimming and chemical washing are done by hand. Wool used for carpet is imported from New Zealand and Tibet of People's Republic of China. Pre-matalised dye stuffs of Sandox, Ciba Geigy and BASF are used in wool dyeing. Some of the manufacturers also use vegetable dyes from plants such as, Madder root, Rhubarb, Berbery, Walnut, Boxbyrtle, Catechu, Emblica, Myrobalan, etc. Carpets are woven in the Tibetan double knotting system using a thick iron rod. The knot density of carpet ranges from 40-125 knots per square inch. Patterns of carpets are influenced by symbols and emblems of Buddhism. However, recently modern designs have been introduced to suit the taste of the buyers mostly in Germany.
    5. Production Locations:  Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Kaski districts of  Nepal.

  2.  READY-MADE GARMENTS

    1. HS: 6203 to 6209.
    2. Description: Garments exported from Nepal include shirts, trousers, jump-suits, skirts, blouses, children wears, industrial clothing, casual dresses, etc.
    3. Uses: All types of garments are for human wear.
    4. Specifications:
      Fabrics are imported from India, Taiwan, S.Korea and Hong Kong, Designs and sizes are available as per buyer's specifications. Most garments are shipped by air. Packaging is done by wrapping in polythene bags and outer packing is done with corrugated box and sometimes it is covered with jute cloth.
    5. Production Locations: There are about 1200 registered units engaged in manufacturing and export of garments in Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Sunsari, Morang, Jhapa, Parsa districts.
    6. Major Markets: USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Japan etc.
  3. LENTILS
    1. HS:0713.40
    2. Description: Lentil is a leguminous crop.
    3. Uses: Whole grain or split is used to prepare dal or soup or to make nuggets, puddings and other food preparations.
    4. Specifications:
      Red or orange colour, whole grain or split mostly packed in Hessian bag of 40 or 50 kgs. each.
    5. Production Locations: Banke, Rautahat, Bardia, Kailali and Rapti districts.
    6. Major Markets: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, UK, Singapore, etc.
  4. HIDES, SKINS, LEATHER AND LEATHER PRODUCTS
    1. HS: 4101, 4105, 4106
    2. Description: Nepal offers leather and leather related products for export. Products available for export are buffalo hides and sheep skins. Hides and skins are mostly exported in wet blue chrome tanned and crust finished forms.
    3. Uses: In manufacturing of leather products such as shoes, clothing, hand bags, wallets etc.
    4. Specifications:

      Full piece: 22 sq.ft.
      Side: 11 sq.ft.
      Calf: 10 sq.ft.
      Thickness: 2.0-2.5 mm.
      Tensile strength: 1.5-2.0 kg. per.sq.mm.

      Leather goods : leather goods include jackets, hand-bags, belts, purses, shoes, wallets, etc.

    5. Production Locations: There are about 18 tanneries in Nepal. Tanneries and leather manufacturing units are located in mainly Birgunj, Hetauda, and Biratnagar.
    6. Major Markets: Italy, Belgium, Germany, USA, France, Japan, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and UK.
  5. HANDICRAFTS

    2. 2. Description: Different kinds of hand made products of Nepal
    3. Uses: Decorative items as well as utilitarian items.
    4. Specifications:
      Most of the hand-made products of Nepal are metal, wood, stone, bone, leather, cotton or woolen fabric based.
    5. Production Locations: Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and other districts of Nepal.
    6. Major Markets: EU, USA, Canada, Japan, Sweden and Australia
       
  6. WOOLEN KNITWEAR AND OTHER PRODUCTS

    2. Description: Knitwear and woolen products include sweaters, gloves, socks, caps, mufflers, jackets, vests, etc.
    3. Uses: Clothing and accessories for men, women, boys and girls.
    4. Specifications: 100% wool, hand or machine spun hand or machine knitted yarn.
    5. Production Locations: Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavre districts.
    6. Major Markets: European countries, USA, Japan, Canada, etc.
  7. TEA

    1. HS: 0902.30
    2. Description: Tea produced in Illam of Nepal is famous for its taste and flavor. Ilam tea is comparable to Darjeeling tea.
    3. Specifications:
      Orthodox and CTC are the varieties available, Exportable grades of orthodox variety are FTGFOP, TGFOP, GOP and FOP. Grades available under CTC group are BOP, OF and PD.
