ITC's training programme in Researching and Analysing Export Markets


This initiative is part of USAID’s and the E.U.’s overall partnership with the International Trade Centre (ITC) to improve global transparency of international trade, directly empowering SMEs, trade advisers and policy makers to make better trade related decisions.

The Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC) in Nepal, in collaboration with ITC, will organise a training programme which includes a series of 3 face-to-face workshops and remote mentoring over the period of several months. The first workshop will start on Tuesday, May 14th until Friday, May 17th 2013 at Hyatt Regency Kathmandu.

The objective of this programme is to reinforce the capacities in:
• Identifying potential markets using a quantitative market scanning methodology
• Preparing a piece of market research to support an export strategy.

Day 1
• Global trends and challenges – Why doing market research?
• Assessing your objective to export – Export Ready
• Practical session: Questionnaire to export
• SWOT analysis
• Practical session: Identifying strengths and weaknesses of your product and company to face global market

Day 2
• Debrief SWOT Analysis
• Practical session: Identifying strengths and weaknesses of your product and company to face global market
• Identifying attractive markets – Market Scan
• Practical session: Identifying attractive markets with “Proximity” indicators
• Identifying attractive markets with trade indicators
• Identifying attractive markets using Trade Map – www.trademap.org

Day 3
• Market access conditions at the tariff level
• Practical session: Analysing tariff in attractive markets and tariff advantages of Nepal compared to its competitors using Market Access Map – www.macmap.org
• Identifying trade opportunities provided by the diaspora
• Practical session: understand how to engage diaspora in broader contexts, i.e. as entrepreneurs/investors; capacity builders; champions; ambassadors; advocates

Day 4
• Debrief
• Practical session: Selecting a target market and finalizing the presentation of the analysis
• Group presentations
